Can you afford R5 per month?

IT is not well known that the 10-member volunteer committee of the non-profit organisation, Keep Hillcrest Beautiful Association is responsible for:

• the maintenance of verges on a section of Old Main Road [from Nqutu Road to Centenary Lane], as well as the centre island in Inanda Road on either side of the rail bridge;

• manages a drop-off recycling centre in Delamore Road thus diverting more than 30 tons of recyclables from the landfill site every month;

• employs five previously unemployed people who are its hands and feet;

• removes graffiti tags;

• adopted the park in Elizabeth Road, which it clears of invasive alien plants, and plants with indigenous trees during Arbor Month.

• awards Verges of the Year annually to corporates, residential, Churches, schools and complexes;

• and that, with sponsorship from Giba Gorge, maintains the rail track from Gillitts station to Padley’s Crossing; and

• it removes illegal advertising from municipal land and produces a monthly newsletter.

It is supported by five local sponsors, and 200 members, to whom we are very grateful, but to remain viable it needs more members and/or sponsors.

However, we ask you to become a member and pay an annual subscription of R50 – which in essence equates to just over R4 per month.

This would help ensure that the association is able to continue with its mandate of keeping the area beautiful, for the benefit of residents, visitors, businesses, and the environment.
