A KWADABEKA man, Thabane Sigadla (24), has been sentenced to an effective 38 years’ imprisonment for hijacking, possession of unlicensed firearm and possession of ammunition.

According to Pinetown SAPS communication officer Captain BJ Manqele, Sigadla was accused of hijacking a vehicle in KwaDabeka in October 2016 as well as another hijacking that took place in New Germany in 2017.

“He was arrested in June 2017 after he and his accomplices hijacked a vehicle in New Germany.

On June 13, 2017, a New Germany man and his family were leaving for work when they were accosted by three gunmen who wore balaclavas.

“The men demanded the Mercedes Benz that the victim was driving and also took his wallet. Before driving off, they first asked the victim to show them how to operate the car.

“The police were alerted and they started searching for the car. The police caught up with the suspect while he was still cruising in Clermont Road. He was then arrested and a police investigation linked him to another hijacking, which took place at Fennen Extension in KwaDabeka in 2016. He was subsequently found guilty on all counts by the Pinetown Magistrate Court.”

The Cluster Commander of eThekwini Inner and Outer West Cluster, Major General Sayer, has commended the great police investigation that brought this man to book.

He said this will serve as a lesson to any other person who is contemplating committing a crime.
