THE Clothes for Africa campaign is a Robin Hood Foundation drive for their “Mahala Markets” which they will be hosting over the next few months.
The first Mahala Market will be in Embo to which 200 gogos have been invited to “shop for free” where they can choose five outfits.

Speaking to the Fever RHF co-ordinator Kim Jones said after their successful “Choose your Shoes” campaign last year they noticed how the gogos – when told they could choose five pairs of shoes – immediately went to the children’s section and chose shoes for the grandchildren they look after.

“So we thought we must do something like that for the gogos and we asked the community because we all have at least one item of clothing in our wardrobe we haven’t worn for a long time.”

Jones said that the foundation is asking the community to spring clean and donate pre-loved clothing, blankets, towels, scarves, hats, beaded jewellery and so on, in good condition, to the Clothes for Africa drive.

“This project is going to rely mainly on donations of pre-loved clothing, but monetary donations would be most welcome for refreshments for gogos on the day of the market and the hiring of equipment, and so on, we will need.”

Jones said there are many upcoming projects the community can be a part of.

“We are looking to complete and open our Siyanda Crèche in mid-October and would grateful for any support towards the costly phase 3, which is the implementation of retaining walls, fencing, security, rain water harvesting systems and the sustainable gardening systems.

“We are also preparing to launch our Bless-a-Granny and Grandpa 2017 and have 20 local old-age homes in the process of preparing their residents’ wish lists - an exciting time of year for the elderly folk.

“Then in November for our Christmas 4 Kids Carnival we host 200 children at Golden Gateway School in Cato Manor. Any sweets, chips, biscuits, toiletries or stationery items towards their Christmas boxes would be appreciated.”
