Community help in arrest

2017-03-21 06:02

ACTING KZN provincial commissioner Major General Bheki Langa has praised the community of Inchanga for assisting the police in apprehending suspects who were involved in a hijacking.
“This shows that a strong partnership between the police and community in our province can decrease crime and make sure that those involved are behind bars. I appeal to the community to continue helping the police in the fight against crime.”

According to Pinetown SAPS communication officer Warrant Officer Manqele, on 7 March at 11 am, the driver of a bakery truck was delivering bread to a Fredville store near Ophuthwini,
when he was approached by two armed suspects.
The suspects demanded cash and took two cellphones. They allegedly forced the driver to drive the truck towards a gravel road and while driving, the driver managed to jump out of the truck, ran away and asked for help from the community.
While in the bush, he allegedly saw community members assaulting the two hijackers. When he went back to his vehicle, he noticed that a safe from the truck was open and an undisclosed amount of cash was gone.
A case was opened at the Inchanga Police Station and the suspects were handed over to the police. The suspects were found in possession of a 38 special revolver, which will be taken for ballistic tests.
The arrested suspects, aged 18 and 24, will appear in the Camperdown Magistrate’s Court facing hijacking and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. — Supplied.
