WITH the generous sponsorship of  Waterfall SuperSPAR, the Forest Hills Athletics Club is proud – once again – to host this popular, Forest 10 race on July 9 commencing at 7am.

This race is a relatively easy 10km run / walk, through Forest Hills in Kloof.
While this is an official race, the genteel 7am start makes this is an event enjoyed by all – from elite runners to regular members of the community just wanting to get out and enjoy an early winter’s morning walk.

Dirk Coetzee, chairman of the athletic section of the club, says the race is fun family event. “We have a free kiddies race for children age three 12, at 9am. While our free tea, coffee and biscuits is legendary, there are also breakfast burgers, and so on, for sale.
“The course is marked at one kilometre intervals, and there are refreshment tables at three, six and nine kilometre distances. There is also plenty of lucky draw prizes up for grabs,” he said.

Coetzee said the race has grown tremendously over the years, thanks to sponsors such as Waterfall SuperSPAR.
“The race started over four years ago with 600 runners and this year we had such an amazing response we had to cap the runners and walkers at 1 500 entrants.”

He said funds raised from the event will be used to help with the maintenance of the club.

Myles Crosthwaite, club chairperson, is pleased with the response to the race. He said this is one of the biggest fund-raisers the club hosts.

“The Forest Hills Athletic Club has a variety of facilities available to the public. Forest Hills AC is at the Forest Hills Sports Club, one of the most family friendly community sports clubs in KZN.
“On Wednesday evenings a social run and time trial, 2,4 or 8 km routes are available. You will find the club buzzing with runners, junior rugby players, tennis players and footballers, braai fires burning and kids playing.

“It is events such as this that keep our club going.”

Des Quin, Waterfall SuperSPAR owner, said the store is proud to be a sponsor of the race and encourages the community to participate in it.
“We have been a sponsor of the race for over 15 years and feel proud to invest in our community in this way.
“The store has contributed to the development of the area and will contribute to giving back in any way we can,” he added.

Participants still wanting to enter can visit the Forest Hills AC on Saturday July 8.
