BEING involved in a car crash inspired Steve Proctor to become a road safety engineer to try to reduce the crashes that take place on the roads each day.

Proctor is a founder of Traffic Management Solution (TMS) Consultancy, a road safety engineer and trainer and author.

Proctor revealed that he’s been in the road industry for over 35 years, saying that what motivated him to explore the industry was because one of his friends was involved in a car crash that he was responsible for.

“I was the one who was driving that car and I was in the wrong. Then I thought to myself, what can I do to try and make a difference in the world with decreasing the number of crashes that are taking place on the road every day,” he explained.

After receiving training, Proctor got a job doing crash research and local authority collision analysis, working for ten years before he established TMS Consultancy in 1990.

“When I finished working, I thought that one of the things that I could do was to be give lecturers about the safety of our roads and how we can reduce the crashes that are happening each and every day,” he said.

To conclude, Proctor said it’s really important not let your fears prevent you from doing what you would like to do and what you need to do.

“As professionals we need to work hard to reduce road casualties, and as citizens we need to consider our responsibilities and not do silly things like drinking and driving or driving too fast. But we also need to move around and continue enjoying travelling and not let the fear of being involved in a crash prevent us from doing that,” he said.
