SARAH van Heerden, the operations manager at the Kloof and Highway SPCA, will be cycling alone for five days across 1000km unsupported - and doing it to make a difference in the lives of animals.

Heerden said that she joined the Kloof and Highway SPCA in January 2012 and this is a way she can use her love for sport to aid her other passion being animals.

“I have always been sports mad – I ended up on a tennis scholarship in the USA after school. Later in life I began running and completed 12 Comrades Marathons and I also got into cycling after having children as it was something my husband and I could do together,” she said.

“I am passionate about mountain biking and have done nearly every stage race available in South Africa from four Cape Epics to three Joberg2Cs and three Cape Pioneer treks just to name some of them.”

She said that the minute she heard about this race the concept appealed to her. “To be on my bike for five days in some of the most beautiful areas in our country is not only a great goal, but has provided a great challenge to use as a fundraiser.”

Describing herself as determined Van Heerden said that she looks up to anyone who makes a difference. “I believe some of the most incredible people fly below the radar – they do not ask for acknowledgement and fame, their reward comes in the form of making a difference somewhere and somehow. From the kid that gives his birthday money into us to the people who brave war torn countries to rescue abandoned animals,” she said.

Her motivation to complete this race will be to raise funds so the SPCA can continue to fight against cruelty against all animals.

Fountain Civil Engineering has generously sponsored an entry Van Heerden to take part in The Munga, the toughest race on earth. She will be riding to raise funds to care for the many unwanted, abandoned, scared and traumatised animals that the Kloof and Highway SPCA will need to take care of during the festive season.

Please help Van Heerden make a difference by sponsoring her and making a donation to the Kloof and Highway SPCA which will give her the motivation and support she will need to finish this grueling race.

Every donation – no matter how big or small – will make a difference in the lives of animals cared for by the Kloof and Highway SPCA.
