Dangerous perceptions

2016-11-15 06:00

I NOTICE with amusement the president’s and Julius Malema’s utterances regarding their bold attitudes towards jail time.

It must be remembered that a jail such as Robben Island was no real jail, but rather a place of incarceration, confinement of comrades of the ANC, whom, through an unjust apartheid regime, found themselves in this and other institutions for lengthy periods. No serious criminals, murderers, etc, just ordinary men and women like everyone else.

Another example were the Boer prisoners of war (1899-1902), who were sent to St Helena. Again, no real jail with murderous criminals, etc, but prisoners none the less.

Struggle veterans, confusing historic jail time with real-life jail today, could find this perception detrimental to their health.

Don’t tempt fate.
