IT took 23 years of practice and dedication to reach her lifelong goal, as Upper Highway lass Beverley Dawn Baksa was crowned the best competitor at the Ladies Tent Pegging World Cup Oman 2018.

The overwhelmed champ said that this was something she had been working towards her entire life.

“My mom dedicated her life to assisting me achieve my goals and it was an overwhelming feeling, seeing what your mother has worked for so hard has finally paid off.

“She was in South Africa cheering me on and I got to win this ultimate prize for her,” said Baksa.

She said she sacrificed a lot when she was young so as to be able to compete at such a level. “You’ve got two options in the morning — it’s either you stay sleeping with your dreams or you can wake up and start chasing them.

“This for me has always been a dream I’ve been chasing and to have been awarded best rider was one of those ultimate experiences and a real highlight in my career,” said Baksa.

Baksa is not only a tent-pegging player but also works full-time at Unilever as a trade marketer. “I work full-time and competing at this level requires dedication and devotion, also a lot of love for horses.

“Monday to Friday, I’m at work and every Saturday I try to fit in three sessions on my horse, which is two hours per session,” she said.

When asked about how her mother felt when she heard the news, she said: “I thought I’d surprise her with the news but by the time I had Wi-Fi and could message her, she was already sending voice notes and crying, praying and praising God.

“It was really an amazing feeling to realise my mom and my dream of becoming the best female rider in the world,” she said.
