WOZA Moya, the income-generating project of the Hillcrest Aids Centre Craft Shop, built by a “dream chair”, is opening at 26 Old Main Road, Hillcrest on December 9.

In 2010 a chair was taken out of a skip and given a second chance by the Woza Moya crafters.

The renovated chair created such an impact that it was voted the most beautiful object in South Africa and was invited to travel the world, collecting dreams from everyone it came into contact with.

The dream chair was eventually sold for R850 000 and the money earmarked to build a new Woza Moya Craft Shop.

Paula Thomson, Woza Moya executive manager, says: “Building a new shop has been our dream for eight years because we’ve been trading from a converted garage and a shipping container.

“A bigger and permanent shop with improved display is long overdue for Woza Moya and with the 1 800 crafters we support, this new shop will enable us to create work for more people in need.

“Our dream is for the shop to become the number one craft hub in KZN and a centre of creative excellence.

The shop will stock handmade crafts sourced from all over South Africa.”

Trading hours for the new shop will be Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm and Saturdays, 8am to 2pm.
