FOR Embo father, Sephelo Flower, gardening is more than a job, it is a way he gives back to his community.

Flower has a full-time job, but the one day a week he gets off (usually a Sunday), he tills the soil and plants flowers at the verge at Springside Road in Hillcrest Park.

When asked about his passion for gardening and how he travels from Embo to Hillcret Park, Flower says he doesn’t take a taxi to work, rather, he puts on his running shoes and runs to Hillcrest Park and then back home on the completion of his “job” there.

He said gardening is his passion, and he loves when people admire his work.

“It makes everything I do worthwhile as these flowers brighten someone’s day.”

Jayne Lyle, Hillcrest Park CPF sub-forum chair, was delighted when she first met Flower and thanked him for what he does for the community.

“When I first met Sephelo he was turning the soil and cleaning a piece of garden, that makes a welcome colorful sight among the green.

“He was very surprised by the attention and said he maintains the piece of garden and keeps it beautiful as the municipality doesn’t get around to doing it.”

Lyle said when she told Flower that when she drives past his little patch of garden with beautifully kept grass and lovely flowers every day it makes her smile.

“Sephelo is a definite gem in our community and it is so refreshing to witness his dedication and commitment,” said Lyle. “Thank you Sephelo for beautifying Hillcrest Park.”
