WITH only two months until the festive season the Hillcrest SAPS are advising residents to be extra vigilant and report crime.

Hillcrest SAPS communications officer Captain Linzi Smith said that failure to report crime will result in the police not knowing where they need to patrol or post members.

She said visible policing is an effective way to reduce crime and accurate crime statistics play an important role in this.

Smith said a crime stat is only valid after it has been reported to SAPS.

Many residents feel that once a crime occurs it is over, however, this is not the case, said Smith.

“Once cases are reported police can work on linking cases and investigating similar circumstances and work on apprehending suspects.

“No matter how trivial or how insignificant you feel the crime is, report it,” Smith said.

Smith said reporting cases also helps police to establish crime trends.

“We can establish some modus operandi of the criminals and offer tips on how to be safe, and most importantly, it will help us put criminals behind bars.

“We are appealing to the community to work with the police so that crime can be decreased over the festive period. Criminal activities can be reported anonymously by phoning the Crime Stop tip-off line on 08600 10111.

“Crime over Christmas is very unpleasant and traumatic, especially for children, and working together we can make a difference.”
