Fooled again

2017-06-13 06:03

YET again we have been fooled by the ANC.

Expectations were high over the weekend that the NEC would at last bow to intense pressure from within and outside the party to show President Jacob Zuma the exit door.

But like his blue-eyed boy Brian Molefe, he put on a tearful show for the camera and survived another attempt on his presidency.

But was there really a serious attempt to oust Zuma?

Was the NEC divided on the question of impeachment?

Was there a motion tabled at the meeting and it was defeated by the NEC? Or was it just one or two who wanted him to go?

We will never know. At the media briefing after the conclusion of the NEC meeting, ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe gave a garbled account of the proceedings and said that the NEC had decided not to remove Zuma.

In any case, how could we have been so naïve to expect the NEC to vote Zuma out when he enjoys such strong support in the NEC?

There’s the loyal speaker of the House, Baleka Mbete, sitting close to him on his right. Will she ask him to go? Never.

And there’s Mantashe, who must have drunk and eaten heartily over the weekend. You think he would bite the hand that feeds him? Never on his life.
