LIONS Clubs International is appealing to the public to assist it with one of the core projects for 2016 - assist the deaf and hard of hearing with hearing aids.

According to Lion Lyn Botha, district chairman for the hearing project, the club collects old hearing aids from the public and takes them to Hear It, where they are tested to see if they are reusable.

She said the club is often contacted by the public who requires hearing aids, but cannot afford them.

“We do a quick check to ensure that it is a genuine case and then contact Hear It. They will do the necessary tests and if they have used hearing aids that suit the patient they advise Lions that they will be able to assist,” she said.

“There is a cost incurred to the recipient for the final test, moulds and reprogramming of the aids.”

She said in order to sustain this project Lions are appealing to the public to donate their old hearing aids, which can be used to change one’s life.

“We need the help of the public to donate old hearing aids as we have far more people requiring them than we have hearing aids,” she said.

“If you have old hearing aids lying around they can be dropped off at Hear It, Richdens Centre, Hillcrest or Hearing aid Labs in Kloof Centre, which are also assisting in this great project.”
