WHAT IS GLAUCOMA?

GLAUCOMA is a disease that damages your eye optic nerve. This is the nerve that connects each eye to the brain. When the optic nerve is damaged some signals from the eye do not reach the brain. This leads to a reduction in your visual field, and, if not managed properly, can lead to blindness.

WHO IS AT RISK?

Glaucoma can affect people of every race, gender and nationality. Risk factors for glaucoma include age – over 40 - family history of glaucoma, African ancestry, nearsightedness (myopia), diabetes, migraine and certain medication.

Signs and symptoms of glaucoma

In the early stages of the disease there are a few signs and symptoms, which include pain, loss of peripheral vision and blindness.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE GLAUCOMA?

If you think you may be at risk of glaucoma, see an ophthalmologist for a screening. A complete eye examination is necessary to determine if you have glaucoma or whether your vision has been affected by glaucoma.

TREATMENT OF GLAUCOMA

Unfortunately, there is no cure for glaucoma. But, if caught early, glaucoma can be treated effectively. Your ophthalmologist will decide which treatment is suitable.

This may include laser treatment, minimally invasive stenting therapy and larger glaucoma opera- tions.
