In this incident Edwards said that the neighbour heard the dogs and the pitiful cries of the Grey duiker.

The neighbour had apparently seen the three dogs chasing the terrified creature on her property, but despite her desperate efforts to intervene, she was only able to fend the dogs off once they had brought the duiker down. The traumatised duiker did not survive the ordeal,” Edwards added.

Loughlin added that the Wildlife Watch was initiated about four years ago after the wildlife had been decimated by six wolves owned by a Botha’s Hill resident. Once they were sent to a wolf sanctuary, it was decided that the watch will monitor the surviving wildlife and record all reported sightings.

“Every unnecessary death of wild animal is a tragic loss. They already survive under stressful conditions and should be protected at all costs,” said Loughlin

“It is immensely important that dog owners do whatever is necessary to keep their dogs confined to their own property and that when they are 'walked', they are on leash.”

She said that once the animal is free and picks up a scent it goes into predator mode and can become very destructive.

“They are no longer the gentle beast you know and love, but something far more powerful and instinctual.”

Cheri Cooke of the Kloof and Highway SPCA confirmed the incident and said that the SPCA inspectors will be investigating the case

“There is so little fauna left in our conservancies and the death of an animal, especially in such a brutal manner is devastating,” she added.
