THE 1st Hillcrest Guides with the help of the community collected 800 boxes to donate to the Knysna Disaster Relief Collection and transported to Knysna by Gift of the Givers.

Guide leader Barbara Mercer thanked the community for the part they played in our Knysna collection. “The overwhelming response from everybody was amazing. It was a great community effort.”

She said the girls were overwhelmed with a letter from Knysna when the goods were delivered, which read: “The Eagle has finally landed in my safe hands this afternoon. I cannot tell you how wonderful it is to get an inventory of goods so beautifully packed and labelled.

“Your boxes went straight to our distribution centres. A massive thank you from the community of this little town. Your generosity and spirit have lifted us through these very sad days.”

Mercer said: “We want our guides to know what it means to give back, and work towards making the community a better place for all and this project did exactly that.”

She encouraged other to join the organisation.

“We have different groups for different age groups. Brownies caters for girls from seven to 10, Guides for girls from 10 to 14 and Ranger Guides for girls from 14 to 18. There is also a section for the little ones, Teddies from five to seven.

“The different programmes aim at empowering girls and women to reach their full potential. The programme covers topics such as leadership, community service, the environment, outdoor activities, and so on, camping, swimming and hiking, guide knowledge, first aid, pioneering and craft,” she added.
