IT is very difficult for pupils to fulfill their academic potential if they lack the basics like food, clothing and health care.

The Angel Fund at Hillcrest High was established to assist pupils in financial need, and in order to enable maximum concentration at school, the fund ensures that no child goes hungry at school.

Angel Fund committee activities are co-ordinated by four teachers and a dedicated group of pupils, who engage in regular fund-raising activities.

Nicola L. Kidgell, marketing and PR of Hillcrest High said the bulk of funds raised to towards providing lunch for needy pupils.

Hillcrest High also assists pupils who don’ have access to medical care.

“In addition we provide stationery and second-hand school clothes to those who cannot afford these.

“We have also assisted pupil’s families with groceries, until their circumstances have improved,” she said.

To raise funds for this cause the school hosts the Angel Tea drive, which this year, will be on 12 March.

“We work in partnership with Dis-Chem on this event. We host ladies for tea and pamper morning from 9am to 1pm in our school hall,” said Kidgell.

“Dis-Chem shares information on health and skin-care, and so on. Dis-Chem also arranges for leading cosmetic houses to pamper ladies with make-overs, nail painting and advice on beauty and health-care. There are lucky draws and significant Dis-Chem hampers to be given away.”
