ELMA Akob, Hillcrest High deputy head girl, has been invited to the Global Young Leaders Conference, in partnership with the United Nations, and is appealing to the community for assistance.

Speaking to the Fever Elma said she has participated in numerous youth upliftment programmes and leadership courses, and had earned various public speaking and debating achievements.

“I participated in The Spirit Of Youth Programme, co-ordinated by the Gordon Institute of Business Science in Pretoria, The Voice of Youth conference organised by the youth for the youth in Michaelhouse, Global Leadership Summit, Toastmasters (provincial level), National Individual Public Speaking and Debating Championships and I came second in KZN for debating.”

She said this is a unique invitation as only a handful of individuals in Africa, who show strong leadership potential, outstanding public speaking abilities and consistent academic excellence are invited, so to be selected in a huge honour for her.
“It is a 13-day leadership journey that helps pupils adopt international leadership strategies, embrace diverse cultures and backgrounds and appreciate unique ways of thinking and seeing the world, and by attending the conference we will be exposed to skills and experience on high demand in universities and businesses.

“One of the activities involve participation in a United Nations meeting with the United Nations secretary general, Ban Ki-moon, to discuss how to solve world issues from the perspective of the youth.”
The final date of enrollment for the conference is 11 December, which by then, to secure a spot, she has to pay half the conference price - R15 000 – the full cost is R30 000, excluding flights and is asking the community for assistance.
“I appeal to the community to donate any amount - funds or sponsorship - that will help me go on this once-in-a- lifetime opportunity trip and I will be eternally grateful.

“This has been my greatest wish since I began high school and an opportunity I have looked forward to as it involves the youth solving problems for a better future for us.” For more information or to donate email akobelma@gmail.com - Supplied.
