LAND Rover Durban-Hillcrest Villagers Rugby Club hosted their annual Richdens Super Spar Touch Tournament on Saturday, at their magnificent home grounds, at The Durban Shongweni Club.

Twenty teams, made up of eight players each, competed "fiercely" for the converted first place.
So much so, that Villagers arranged for 10 KZNRU qualified referees to officiate the games.

The teams came from far and wide, and boasted strange and innovative names such as, The Bullets, The Keg Reserves, Baby Blacks, Alpine Kings, The Gangsters, Magnum Precision, The Green Bottle Ballies, Shake n Bake, Spartans, Boogamina's, Kingsway Knights, The Untouchables, Brisbane Bombers, Banter Panthers, Ballies, Kloofies, Big n Nimble and the Cunning Stunts.
Even a couple of former SA Sevens' players were evident amongst the players on the day.

After a grueling eight hours of pool games, sudden-death playoffs, knockouts and finals, "The Honey Badgers" & "The A-Team" emerged as the ultimate and deserved finalists.

Both finalists, made up primarily of current premier and first division "rugger buggers", officiated by top KZNRU referee, Theshin Naicker, went head to head in a nail biting cup final, with The A Team emerging as the Winner, and claiming 1st Prize of R6000, sponsored by Darryn le Grange from Action Coach Kloof.

The Green Bottle Ballies came home in third position, showing that one is never too old, or too serious to play and enjoy the game of rugby.

Villagers expressed thanks to Dezzo Roofing and Darryn Le Grange Action Coach for their sponsorship towards the touch tournament.
Dezzo Roofing sponsored all the team shirts allowing us to send every player home with a shirt to remember our tournament and Darrryn Le Grange Action Coach sponsored the prize money for the event. “We must also thank all the other prize sponsors for their sponsorships allowing us to ensure every team received a prize. ARB IT Solutions, Keg & Trout, Pintos, Station Masters, Durban Shongweni Club, Caltex Hillcrest, Headlines Hair Salon, Equip promotions and Land Rover Durban,” said the club.

Tournament convener and long serving Villagers "Clubman", Mike de Kock, praised all the players, referees, first aid, spectators and sponsors, for making the day an outstanding and enjoyable success. - Supplied
