House break-ins on the increase

2018-02-06 06:00

HILLCREST police are urging members of the community to be vigilant as house break-ins and house robberies are increasing.

Hillcrest SAPS communications officer Captain Linzi Smith said that the public needs to be more vigilant and put equipment such as bicycles, etc. away, and not let them be visible in yards.

“At night, keeping security gates locked if leaving doors open. If doors and security gates are left open it allows easy access into one’s home.

“Another tip is to try to keep the entrance to the property and fencing clear of shrubs and bushes, allowing more visibility.” Smith said that poor visibility of addresses on homes has become a concern for the Hillcrest police, as it is hindering their response time to call outs.

“When attending to a complaint we rely on a physical address. There are a lot of houses that are not numbered. This causes us to have to drive up and down looking for a specific house number.

“This contributes to our time response, members having to use their private cellphones to contact the complainants, etc.,” she said. Smith is urging the community to ensure that their house is correctly and clearly numbered. “The community’s assistance in this regard will be greatly appreciated,” said Smith.
