In defence of King Goodwill Zwelithini

I WRITE in defence of King Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu against attacks by those who do not understand the significance of the Zulu monarchy in our country.

The Zulu monarchy and monarchies of Europe arise from different histories, and cultural differences would make any comparison unfair.

We should not hear about the functions of British royals and then expect the same of the Zulu traditional establishment.

It is easy to question the purpose of the traditional establishment if you do not understand traditional institutions and colonial history.

The compromise deal that delivered our democracy in 1994 had to recognise the important role of all traditional institutions such that customary law even became embedded in our Constitution to be further developed through case law.

The Zulu monarchy has an established history in South Africa and is here to stay. He serves his people, from whom land was dispossessed, and all manner of social evils were perpetrated by the ancestors of the British royals against his people. His subjects have not complained about what they see as his public duty to them. I’m not sure why anyone else should.
