THE Krantzkloof Nature Reserve recently re-opened the extended Nkutu Trail which had been closed for a number of years. The trail now offers an additional option for a pleasant walk through grasslands during which two beautiful waterfalls (Upper and Lower Nkutu Falls) can be visited.
The views at the end of the gorge are also amazing as one looks across to the Malphonjane Outcrop which separates the Nkutu and Molweni Gorges and the views extend all the way to the uMngeni River. The descent to the both falls are quite steep and visitors should proceed with caution particularly in wet weather.

Total distance of the trail is approximately 2km (1,5hr) one way and the walk is rated as easy with the exceptions of the descents and ascents to the waterfalls which are rated as difficult.
Due to the isolated nature of this trail (with poor or no cellphone signal) it is recommended that visitors should walk in groups of not less than 4-6 persons.
The picnic site is well equipped with a large lawn, a kiddies jungle gym, braai stands with tables and benches. Toilets include facilities for disabled persons.

Visitors can reach the Nkutu Picnic site via Valley Drive in Forest Hills.
It is only open at weekends (6am – 6pm) and on Public Holidays and is manned by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife Field Rangers.
