ARISTIDE Du Plessis is one of the country’s finest cellists, making regular appearances on national television and radio, both as a soloist and chamber musician.

He has performed in some of the world’s most renowned concert halls ranging from the Zürich Tonhalle and Vienna Musikverein to the Herkulessaal in Munich, Wiener Konzerthaus and the Berliner Philharmonie.

As a soloist, he has performed since the age of 15 with all the country’s leading orchestras such as the KZN Philharmonic, the Cape Philharmonic, and Camerata Tinta Barocca (Cape Town). He is currently co-principal cellist with the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra.

Speaking to the Fever, he said that music has always been a part of him. “I’ve been in music my entire life, the reason for that is because both my parents were musicians.

“My father was a singer and my mother is a pianist. I started playing the Cello at 11 years and even then, I knew I’d make this my career.”

He said that he has many role models in his career yet, he is really fond of the famous Italian cellist, Enrico Dindo, and the German composer Johannes Brahms.

“I also like the motivation of people like Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and several of my teachers.”

Du Plessis has notched up many accolades - in 2015 he was appointed co-principal Cellist of the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra, and in 2014 he won the Kiwanis Chamber Music prize in Switzerland.

Apart from this he won awards in South Africa as a student, such as top prizes in competitions like ATKV Musiq and the Stellenbosch National Ensemble Competition.

When not practising or playing on stage, Du Plessis’s hobbies include learning about art, history, philosophy - the human condition.
