SHE started gracing the stage at only four years old, and now Keely Crocker has become a well-known singer in and around Durban.

She has been singing at the Highland Gathering event since 2015 and loves being part of the Amanzimtoti gathering.

“I love singing Amazing Grace at the end with the One-Med pipe band during the mass band march pass. It is such an honour to sing with the pipers and be a part of the Highland Gathering tradition,” she said.

Having been placed first in Talent America in 2015 and Talent Africa in 2017 to being the opening act for Ard Matthews for his October Jam Tour, this is only the beginning for her.

“I’ve been singing since as far back as I can remember. My mom has a picture of me on stage when I was about four years old but I’d say that after I sang in my first competition at the Kuswag Carnival and won my age group when I was nine years old, I knew this was what I wanted to do,” said Keely.

The young star plays the guitar and is learning how to play the piano, taught by her grandfather, and she is able to write her own music.

“My grandpa plays the guitar and he taught me from a young age. I started taking it seriously since high school. I write my own songs and play my own chords on the guitar,” said Keely.

Not only is she a singer but also a well-seasoned performing artist, and she would like to one day combine acting, dancing and singing.

“It all started when I attended a school holiday singing workshop when I was about nine years old with Carol Dillon at La Lucia Pre-Primary School.

From there, I made it through to the top nine of the Gateway to Fame competition for two years in a row where we performed at the Barnyard,” said Keely.

She has also been involved in the 60 minutes Fight Against Drug and Alcohol Abuse awareness roadshow for three years and it released a song titled Hope.

“I’m now rehearsing for my school musical and I will be performing in the Born to Perform concert in September in Johannesburg,” said Keely.

She was recently also in Talent Africa, where she won gold in all of her seven categories, which included acting; singing; songwriting; vocals and modelling, photographic print, plus three additional special awards.

When asked where she sees herself in a few years’ time, she said: “In three years I hope to be studying at the New York Film Academy and pursuing my performing arts dream. In five years I hope to be living the dream.”

She released her first music video cover on YouTube in February 2017, and her song Never in Love is getting good ratings on SoundCloud.

“I draw my inspiration from personal experiences, movies, TV, magazines and other people’s stories. I have written lots of songs. A song that I feel I have done well with is my own song on SoundCloud, Never in Love, which also won first place in my age group at Talent America in 2015.

“I also won gold at the Talent Africa nationals in 2017 for another one of my own songs, These Stories, plus I have just won gold at Talent Africa nationals in Port Elizabeth for my own song Fake Love. I will be recording another one of my original songs in September,” said Keely.
