Kloof’s hidden gem

2017-09-26 06:01

KRANTZKLOOF Nature Reserve has become exceptionally popular over the past few years most probably because of an increased marketing effort via social media and the popularity of the trails and in particular the amazing success of the 3 Falls Trail Run.
One of the problems resulting from the increased popularity has been congestion at the Kloof Falls Picnic Site particularly over weekends and public holidays while at the same time the Nkutu Picnic Site remains relatively under-utilised.
To attract visitors to the Nkutu Picnic Site the conservancy, with the approval of the reserve management, recently reopened the Nkutu (red) trail to the Lower Nkutu Falls, which has been closed for about 15 years as well as refurbished the path to the Maliphonjwana View site.
This now provides visitors to the Nkutu Picnic Site with additional hiking options as both trails provide access to stunning view sites. The walk to the Lower Nkutu Falls takes about two hours one way if the Upper Nkutu Falls are included. The walk is level and easy except for the climbs up and down to the falls which are rated as difficult. The initial part of the walk meanders through a KZN Sandstone Sourveld Grassland and then through a short section of Scarp Forest reaching a stunning view site at the end of the Nkutu Gorge. The Lower Nkutu Falls are an amazing gem with a deep pool surrounded by towering cliffs.
