THE Pinetown Fever reporter Nosipho Mkhize met with KwaDabeka’s hip-hop and R&B artist Sabza Canz to get to know him better.
NM: Tell me about Sabza Canz.
SC: My name is Sanele Ndzimande and my stage name is Sabza Canz. I grew up in Clermont where I matriculated in 2013.
I’m a humble person with a great sense of humour. I like to keep people happy, and of course, I’m a big dreamer

When did you start music and what motivated you?

SC: I started music in 2010 however I fell in love with music when I was about nine. At that time I didn’t have a clue about music. I’m motivated by artists such as Mandoza because of the way he presents his sound and his lyrics are based on kasi situations. I'm also inspired by the American rapper artist Eminem - I like how he writes. When I was young I would watch my neighbour play his guitar for Maskandi songs and the way he played those melodies inspired me.

What is your music based on?
SC: It’s usually based on real life experiences. When I do my music I motivate and inspire people. My emotions also control my music. When writing songs I mention things that happen to people.

How long have you been into music?
SC: I've been doing music for about six years

What type of music do you do?

SC: I do hip-hop and sometimes R&B dance.

What are some of the ‘mental tools’ you have to be successful in this field?

SC: The biggest mental tool is to be successful. You just need to be confident and lead and inspire people and know how people think and feel about your music

Give me one word to describe you experience in this industry.

SC: One word is zig-zag because sometimes things go greaet and the next they don’t.

How do you keep focused on your work?

SC: I don’t usually lose focus, I just let the music take over.
