Lawlessness in Hillcrest

2017-01-24 06:01

I WRITE to you despairing at the blatant lawlessness in the area, and I am not talking about murder and robbery. I refer to the absolute disregard for the laws of the road.

There is an old saying “look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves”. If we apply this to good old police work I believe a lot of other ills would be solved.

Hillcrest has over the years provided a taxi rank behind the Pick n Pay, which allows parking and safety for passengers boarding and alighting.

For a long time now the taxi operators choose to park blocking half of old main road (the busiest in the area) by parking and dropping off or loading customers causing chaos and danger to the public . I recently watched a police van cruising past at a time when three taxis were blocking the road not even bothering to stop and take action.

It is a given that lawlessness perpetuated by our police force not enforcing the laws of the road leads to more disregard for the law.

People will note a passageway from the shopping centre to cross the road, however, at this point there is no crossing, it is further up at the traffic lights.
This passageway should be closed off with a solid fence stopping the thorough fare and thus the pick-up point for taxis and dangerous road crossing.

There is a perfectly good walkway from the centre to the road crossing point so there is no negative for anyone.

I note, however, that this is poor publicity for companies advertising on the lawless taxis.
