THE Friends of Kloof Library Forum are delighted to announce an exciting guest, the illustrious journalist, Allister Sparks, who will address the forum and launch his latest book - The Sword and the Pen: Six Decades on the Political Frontier - on Monday 9 May at 6pm at the Kloof Junior Primary School, Abelia Road.

Publishers Jonathan Ball, describe the book as “the story of how as a journalist, Allister Sparks, observed, chronicled and participated in his country’s unfolding drama for more than 66 years, covering events from the premiership of DF Malan to the presidency of Jacob Zuma, witnessing at close range the rise and fall of apartheid and the rise and crisis of the new South Africa”. The recently published book has received excellent reviews.

Copies will be on sale by Adams at the launch at a discounted price - credit card facilities will be available, and Sparks will sign them.

Sparks has always been an interesting and excellent speaker. He has shown exceptional courage, strength and sensitivity in his writing, particularly evident as editor of the Rand Daily Mail at the height of South Africa’s political unrest in the seventies. He’s the recipient of many prestigious international awards and was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for his reporting of racial unrest in South Africa in 1985.

Nelson Mandela described Sparks as “one of South Africa’s eminent journalists, whose outspoken views have served the cause of democracy in this country magnificently”.

As this is a book launch, tickets cost R10 each, available from Kloof Library on 031 764 7543.
