Man sets self alight over ID

2016-07-12 06:05

POLICE confirmed that a man doused himself with petrol in the Molweni satellite police station charge office, threatening to set himself alight if he wasn’t given an ID.

“A 36-year-old man came to the police station with petrol and poured it onto himself in the Molweni satellite police station charge office,” said SAPS spokesperson, Thulani Zwani.

The desperate man also held officers hostage, and suffered a gunshot wound on top of the burn wounds he inflicted on himself.

“He burnt himself and tried to burn a vehicle that was parked inside the premises,” Zwane added.

When other police officers arrived to rescue their colleagues, the man tried to grab one of the constables, but was wounded when an officer fired a shot in his direction. He was treated by paramedics there- after before being taken to hospital. Due to his injuries the man is yet to be charged. - Supplied.
