KLOOF High School marketing manager Janet Brodey (47) has always had passion for marketing and design. This passion led her to being appointed as the school’s marketer in 2013.

She said: I have worked at Kloof High school for the past 13 and a half years. I started off as the secretary to Mr Dave Seager (principal). When Mr Seager left in 2005 I became Mrs Lefort’s secretary when she was appointed as acting principal, and the principal in 2011. My job involved a lot of liaison with the Department of Education as well as general administrative duties.

“I have always had an interest in design and marketing and in November 2012 Mrs Lefort asked me to start up and run the school’s marketing department from January 2013.

“I was greatly honoured by her faith in me to take on this mammoth task and I was up for the challenge. It has been a slow but steady road with many challenges along the way, but I love every minute of my job. I have a huge passion for the school, its pupils and staff, and want to see it continue to grow and to not only become the school of choice in the upper highway area, but nationwide.”

Janet was born in Nairobi, Kenya and she has good childhood memories where she travelled from time to time with her parents.

“I had an amazing childhood. My parents and I travelled by ship from Kenya to South Africa when I was a year old. We started off living in Durban, but over the course of my entire childhood, moved to several different places, including Botswana, Transkei and Swaziland.

“My parents love to travel so my siblings and I got to experience different cultures and environments and it also gave me the bug to travel in my adult years. Both my brother and sister were born in Durban. I matriculated at Scottburgh High in 1986 and went on to first qualify as a medical secretary and then completed a three year National Diploma in Interior Design in 1991.”

Janet explained her daily duties as a marketing manager, she said:“I deal with all the marketing related aspects of the school. I maintain the school’s Facebook page, website, D6 School Communicator and Twitter account. I do a lot of the graphic work for our adverts, posters, brochures, booklets and programmes. I also do the design and layout of the school’s annual magazine called The Bridge.

“I am the main organiser of the annual Senior Prize-giving, Junior Prize-giving, assist with the organisation of the Evening of Excellence, open day as well as other functions that take place at the school during the course of the year. I liaise with the newspapers regarding the submission of articles and adverts. I am involved in fund-raising and as of next year will be involved in pupil admissions.”

Her message to the youth and said: “Be your own person, never give up on your dreams and aspirations and live life to the fullest”.
