HILLCREST Fever, along with Watercrest Mall, Bargain Books, Freddo Ice Cream, Mugg and Bean, Queenspark, Panarottis, Pentravel, SA CAN, Waterfall SuperSpar and Shell Hillcrest, thanked the communities’ local heroes for their hard work and dedication, with a goodie bag on March 25.

The heroes were nominated by the community and were chosen according to the number of nominations per candidate.

The winners were: Tracy Mclelland Smit as she goes the extra mile to save broken and abused animals. Ivan D. Ikes, who is also known as the “local handy hero” who steps up whenever there is a community need, from a general cash donation to transporting a sick child he has not met to hospital. Ma Eunice has selflessly transformed her house into the Siyajabula Orphanage centre, becoming a mother to 40 children.

Janet Legemaate was chosen as she  leads organ-donor campaigns and has been the reason why so many individuals (especially in the Upper Highway Area) have registered to become organ donors or have received organs that have saved their lives.
Tracy Cummings is the backbone of the SARDA Durban branch, offering therapeutic riding for special children. The Vema Paramedics  were chosen for their voluntary paramedic unit and Rescuetech for their voluntary rescue service.

The winners were pleased with their nominations and said that they offer their services for the love of helping others in need.

They also encouraged others to follow in their footsteps.
“If we all gave a little, how great would our community be,” said Ikes, one of the winners.
