MUSIC producer Skhumbuzo Nxumalo (24), also known as “Dj Music”, was born and raised in iXopo in a place called eHlokozi.

Nxumalo produces house music called igqom (type of house music that was established in Durban and has now dominated other provinces and London as well), electro music and deep house. Nxumalo moved to Durban to study and to begin his music career.

“I am a self-taught producer who started by banging desks at school during break time in order to create a rhythm and make the whole class dance to it.

I had a friend named Snalo Cebekhulu, known as Big Pun Cebekhulu, who had the same vision as me. We attended the same primary school and went to the same high school and we are together still today.”

“Cebekhulu and I struggled to record our first song.

“We faced rejection and discrimination from other recording companies. However, in 2009, we met producers from Push Iplani Productions where we did our first song at Jah Costar Entertainment. We invested a lot in Push Iplani Productions and therefore we became directors in 2011.”

Nxumalo’s first single, titled Charlie Ungenzantoni, was produced in his studio in iXopo.

“At that time people knew me as Alpha Music and they loved every beat of my song. I recorded my second single with an artist from Simply God Music called Wonder K. We did a love song and we did a lot of radio interviews and performances until we separated and the project was stopped.”

He describes himself as a multitalented artist after producing two films with DMP and Blue Dots Films in 2014, and he works in partnership with HRH Prince Africa Zulu.

“I produced a video for the Onkweni Cultural Festival and for the second annual Clermont Art Festival in 2017. I have produced a music video for many artists, namely Billy, SK, Nippo, K-Sab and more. I also formed a modelling agency called Unique Models, which is a project under Push Iplani Productions,” he said.

Nxumalo is now working with female vocalist Buhle on his third single titled Sthandwa Sami. “The song is not out yet but we are working towards releasing it by the end of March.”
