THIS December, Shap Shap Cinema is set to host several Christmas parties for the creches that they work with and the two Gogo’s groups that they run, but they need the help of the community to make it truly festive.

Shap Shap Cinema is a non-profit organisation that creates educational material in isiZulu which they share at mobile cinemas in rural areas around KwaZulu-Natal.

Founder of Shap Shap Cinema Bianca Ivankovic said that they have been working with these creches to upgrade their facilities so that they can provide a safer and more engaging environment for the children that attend them.

“We are hoping to provide each of these creches with some of these upgrades this December so that they can start the new year with a lovely looking creche,” said Ivankovic.

She said that there’s still a lot of work to be done at each of these facilities and they can’t do it all by themselves. They are appealing to the public to help them: “We require plaster, paint, window panes, pictures, carpets, kiddies tables and chairs, and of course books and toys to really get these facilities up to a good standard.”

Additionally, at the parties that they want to throw, they will hand out Santa’s Shoe Boxes to all of the children and Gogo’s.

“We will be throwing a Christmas party at each of the creches and Gogo’s groups, so we are appealing for donations of chips, sweets, cooldrink, cake, balloons, and face paint,” she said.

She explained that a Santa Shoe Box is the packaging that one could use to put the necessary things into that a child or gogo could use.

Items that go into the Santa’s Shoe Box for children include things like a facecloth and soap, toothbrush and toothpaste, a book, magazine, a toy, sweets, biscuits, chocolate, socks, hat, stationary, and colouring things.

For Gogo’s and Mkhulu’s it could be a facecloth and soap, toothbrush and toothpaste, as well as age appropriate items such as a handkerchief, scarf, comb, a beaded necklace, perfume, and soft sweets and biscuits.

In conclusion, Ivankovic said any contribution or donation towards this festive project would be much appreciated.

“We still have many children and Gogo’s needing pledges for gifts. If people are interested and would like to choose a child, Gogo and Mkhulu they can contact us,” she said.

Those who might be interested can e-mail or call Ivankovic at 073 290 9816. Alternatively, write to them on their Facebook page Shap Shap Cinemas.
