PINETOWN Fever journalist Nosipho Mkhize chatted to Doctor Zandile Mdakane, a local Chiropractic doctor, to find out more about her work.

NM [Nosipho Mkhize]: Please tell me about yourself.

ZM Zandile Mdakane]: I am an African female who has a big and caring heart. I like helping people and seeing them smile.

NM: When did you become a doctor?

ZM: I became a doctor in October 2016 and I only graduated in May 2016.

NM: Please explain what a chiropractic doctor does?

ZM: A chiropractor diagnoses and treats musculoskeletal related conditions. Depending on what a patient has and needs, we do spinal and extremity adjustments, soft tissue therapy where we massage, dry needling and use machines such as TENS machine.

NM: What type of patients do you consult on a daily basis?

ZM: I mostly see people with sport injuries, arthritis, headaches, back pain, ankle and foot pain.

NM: What are the biggest tools a person needs if they want to be successful in this career?

ZM: If you want to become a chiropractor, you need focus plus commitment, which may lead to advancement. Being honest and being professional may lead to a good reputation. You need to persevere and work hard and love working with people.

NM: What are your hobbies?

ZM: My hobbies are reading, hiking, cooking and baking.

NM: Any health tips you would like to give to our readers?

ZM: I would like to advise people to take care of their spine. Prevention is better than cure — you can’t get a donor for your spine. Look after your health and check your kidneys regularly, especially if you take chronic medication.
