ANY parent knows that when you take a child shopping it sometimes becomes a nightmare with them hungry and the nagging for junk food, yet Food Lover’s Hillcrest is solving this problem - one fruit at a time.

Earlier this month Food Lover’s began offering one free fruit to children under 10 to eat in the store while their parent shops.

The store’s owner Gilbert Rocha said this concept is the first of its kind for the Upper Highway area and was an immediate hit.

“I saw the idea on Facebook about stores doing this overseas and thought what a brilliant idea this would be in our community,” said Rocha.

When the “Free Fruit 4 Kids” stand went up last week it immediately drew praise and word about the programme spread like wildfire.

“Parents and grandparents congratulated us on this concept and were excited to see their little ones eating fruit.”

Rocha said the store plans to continue the programme for the foreseeable future.

“Based on the feedback we’ve got from everyone, we plan to keep it up as long as the parents and children continue to like it,” he said.

“It’s good to see a step in the right direction, and even better to see the community responding so positively.”

Mrs Smith, a regular Food Lover’s shopper, says she is chuffed about the concept as her seven-year-old daughter is now addicted to pears after she tasted one from the stand.

“This is a brilliant idea and I hope other stores follow in Food Lover’s footsteps,” she said.
