WITH a love for sports, Telise Tonkin developed herself to perfect her sporting skills and was appointed the touch-rugby and hockey coach at Hillcrest High School.

With sports at the back of her mind in everything she does, Tonkin said she wants to be the best of the best and is determined to better herself in any way she can. Some of her achievements include being appointed a referee in 2013 at the USA National Championships. In addition, she participated in the 2015 Touch Rugby World Cup for the mixed group. She has also studied teaching and has a Level 3 certificate for
refereeing.

She said that she is now training for Ironman, which she has not participated in before. “I’ve never tried one before so it’s going to be my first time.”

Tonkin’s daily routine consists of waking up in the early hours of the morning to begin training.

“I wake up at two or three in the morning, go for a run for two hours and come back to get ready to go to school. I get to school, coach and then go back and train during the afternoons.

“On Saturdays, I train for four hours and Sundays I train for three hours for touch rugby,” she said.

However, Tonkin said that training too hard can cause you an injury and if you don’t rest you might hurt yourself even more. “I couldn’t train last week because I injured my lower back and was then forced to rest from Friday until Monday. I had to because in three weeks’ time there will be the Three Cranes Challenge, which I’m also participating in,” said Tonkin.

She said her injury made her miss out on the Midmar Mile and the Hillcrest Marathon.

She said that she doesn’t feel any pressure in what she’s doing because she’s being driven by the passion she has for sports.

“I’m happy about it because this is what I’m very comfortable and passionate about — teaching, coaching and training are what drive me because I love sports,” she said.
