Pets suffer from fireworks

A DOG had to be euthanased after it picked up a firecracker moments before it exploded.

According to the Kloof and Highway SPCA, fireworks on New Year’s Eve saw their kennels packed with terrified stray animals rounded up by inspectors throughout the night some of which sustained serious injuries.

Spokesman Lisa Gadd said the “festive season and New Year celebrations have hit our SPCA hard”.

“We are shocked with the irresponsible use of fireworks in our community during the New Year’s celebrations last night.”

Gadd said an inspector was called out in the early hours after a dog tried to retrieve a lit firework — which then exploded in her mouth.

“The dog was euthanased immediately. The owners will be charged criminally in terms of the Animals Protection Act.” Gadd said their kennels were “overflowing”.

“Twenty-five stray animals have come through our doors since 31 December. Only four were microchipped and re-united with their families immediately. A further seven of these animals have been claimed by their families.

“Six of these animals succumbed to various injuries while trying to flee the terror of the fireworks. One dog was admitted to an emergency veterinary hospital and was euthanased immediately as she was hit by a car,” said Gadd.

Gadd said their inspectors were on duty throughout the New Year’s Eve festivities.

“We ask pet owners to continue to remain cautious over the next few days as remaining fireworks may be set off sporadically,” said Gadd.

Television news channel eNCA reported fireworks “chaos” on Durban’s beachfront soon after the clock struck midnight.
