‘Petty’ crime can be avoided

2018-01-30 06:00

AS the summer days are longer, more families are outside braaiing, gardening and participating in outdoor activity.

However, an unfortunate fact of warmer days is that petty crimes such as theft begin to increase.

Linzi Smith Hillcrest SAPS communications officer says criminals are always looking for an opportunity to make a quick buck.

“When families are participating in an outdoor activity they need to put garden furniture, bicycles and garden tools, and so on, away as items are in full view and are precipitating factors in allowing perpetrators to come onto properties and take these items.

“Another tip is to keep the entrance to the property and fencing clear of shrubs and bushes allowing more visibility and more lighting,” she added.

Smith says the onus is on the property owner to keep their home safe and not to “invite” criminals into their homes.
