MAIN Group of Spars’ director Grant Nicholls, a Pinetown local and an old boy of PBHS, was deputy head prefect in 1993 and was awarded the A.G. Visser Prize in his matric year.

He participated in various school activities and sports but was happiest in the pool, where he captained the 1993 swimming team and played over 50 games of first team water polo, finally making KZN schools as well as the KZN U21 water polo team.

He has now taken to road running and will hopefully complete his third Comrades Marathon this year.

Main Group of Spars consists of four stores, namely, Main Spar at Sandy Centre, Sarnia Spar, Escombe Kwikspar and Hillary Spar, with a fifth to be added soon.

Nicholls started with Spar as a casual packer in Grade 9 and worked most school holidays and weekends, picking up a passion for retail and the Spar Group. Spar is the only company that he has been involved with.

He has fond memories of his school years spent at PBHS and is still actively involved as a supporter and sponsor of PBHS. Nicholl’s advice to present pupils at PBHS is to “have a clear vision of the goals you have set and then have endless perseverance and energy to reach those goals”.
