THE festive season has approached and police are advising the public to be vigilant at all times wherever you are.

Pinetown SAPS communication officer BJ Manqele gave the following safety tips:

• Keep doors locked

• Do not leave any garden tools or any valuables lying around the yard.

• Avoid leaving keys at any places outside the house like under a stone or on the window seal as criminals tend to monitor what happens in our homes.

• Always be cautious of suspicious vehicles around your homes. If you’re coming from work or anywhere and you spot a suspicious vehicle or any person lurking around your gate, do not open the gate. Rather drive away or call the police.

• Always keep your windows closed and doors locked especially when approaching intersections.

• Do not drink and drive.

• Don’t carry large amounts of cash.

• Always be cautious of vehicles following you.

• Drivers are advised to fit in tracking devices in their cars as it makes it easy for the car to be traced and for possible recovery.

• Always make sure that all the doors of your car are locked properly before leaving and do not press the remote from a distance to avoid remote jamming.

• Do not put on any expensive jewellery as it will make you a target.

• Always be cautious of suspicious people on the road.

• Avoid walking alone especially in deserted areas.

• Do not carry any large sums of money or any valuables.

• Avoid withdrawing large sums of money

• Rather use the facility inside the bank to transfer the money into stokvel member’s accounts.

We urge the public to not release any important information to callers who request it via cellphones.

To report crime call 0800 10111.
