Plastic bags destroy the environment

THE Keep Hillcrest Beautiful Association is concerned about the excessive use of plastic bags in the area. We want to make residents aware of the problem of the damage that plastic bags do to the environment, to reduce their use.

Plastic bags take generations to break down. Paper takes weeks.

South Africans use almost 8 billion plastic shopping bags a year, of which 96% finish up in the landfill after 20 minutes use.

Most stores offer reusable cloth shopping bags for a modest fee.

Kenya has recently banned plastic bags. There is a $ 40 000 fine for carrying a plastic bag.
