Prevent opportunistic crime — be ‘NICE’

2018-12-25 06:00

CRIMINAL activities are on the increase in the Upper Highway area, and residents are being warned to be on a lookout for anything suspicious.

SA Community Crime Watch founder and Hillcrest CPF chairman Steven King said he can’t say for sure why the crime is so high in the Upper Highway area at the moment but, unfortunately, violent crimes such as armed robberies, burglaries, murder, attempted murder and serious assault tend to increase markedly over the festive season. “Opportunistic crime also increases as more people are away on holiday, people are on leave and relaxing at home, making use of the opportunity to braai outdoors, consuming alcohol, and also with the warmer weather people tend to sleep with windows open, thinking they are safe behind the burglar guards and gates. This is a serious mistake as criminals have the means to breach your property,” explained King.

He said that the community must always bear in mind that criminals don’t want to spend Christmas empty handed, they are out in full force to also make use of the opportunity to get what they want — your hard earned cash and possessions

“There is a lot of cash in circulation as people are getting bonuses, businesses have a much higher turnover and the knockings at banks will increase,” he said.

The founder advised that the community must cooperate in order to prevent and reduce crime and they must be aware of possible danger at all times, saying: “They must be mentally prepared for any incident which might occur.”

BE “NICE” THIS FESTIVE SEASON

King shared the safe slogan “NICE” which he said, if it is followed, will make a difference.

N — NOTICE — EVERYONE

I — INSTINCTS — TRUST THEM

C — COMMON SENSE — USE IT

E — ENVIRONMENT — BE AWARE
