JUST a little over a year after releasing his debut single Extravaganza, June Vth (pronounced “fifth”) has featured on the SlikourOnLife Incubator album and is gaining recognition from magazines and radio shows across the country. The-up-and-coming star spoke to Fever’s Purnal Poonusamy about what’s next on the agenda for him.

PP (Purnal Poonusamy): Can you tell us who June Vth is?

  • June Vth is a musician who specializes in all kinds of genres [and] doesn’t allow any specifics to limit him. Born and bred in Mthatha, you can tell by just looking at the young artist that he is forged to be what he is, an all-round musician.PP: What was your inspiration and motivation to follow this path?JV: To be honest with you, I never got to look at who inspired me, as I listen to a lot of music (different genres) so it gets difficult to pin-point whoever could have inspired me. But the love and support of family and close friends, whom I see as family, is what got me to be the person I am.PP: Tell us a bit about your debut single?JV:This is one for the charts, I’m telling you, Extravaganza. The way things are set up kind of contradicts my choice in music. But this single is set to level out any doubts or any weird expectations people may have for my choice of sound, which is exactly what it’s doing even though I keep giving the people more of what I can do.PP: You featured on the SlikourOnLife Incubator album. How did it feel to be part of that?JV: It’s obviously a great feeling, coming out of nowhere and getting recognised on a major scale. It definitely played a huge role in my life as an upand-coming artist and a big shout out to Slikour for recognizing and believing in my talent at such a young age. So, I must say, I’m proud of myself and we still have a long way to go, we’re only getting started.PP: What message do you wish to convey with your music?JV:Unity, and the importance of being confident. I don’t want people to just relate to what I have to say. I want them to be able to live it out. All my songs are straight from the soul, so there is nothing off or synthetic about it. I also want people to understand that you don’t have to fake or claim things you don’t really have in order to tell a good story, as long as you tell the world about your true encounters and embrace what you have then more people will relate and look up to your story.

PP: What does the future hold for June Vth?

JV: (Laughs) Well no one is a fortune teller and none can see what tomorrow has in store for us. But I can guarantee you, this won’t be the last time you’re going to be hearing the name June Vth. I believe everything has its right time and I have got a lot of work that is waiting for its right time to be put out, but when it comes though everyone will know.

I am working on releasing a song, called Nelson Mandela, this September which we believe will really put us on the map in a major scale this year going forward.

PP: Some of the musicians you would like to work with in the future?

JV: Well, I believe in growing with my own people in the game but I would love to work with Emtee, Sjava, Cassper Nyovest, Nathi Mankayi, Zahara and Anatii.

PP: What is your ultimate dream as a musician?

JV: Global success. If I could make it possible to reach and touch the souls of millions, I would’ve done my fair deal of what I’m capable of. I don’t want to be praised, I just want to serve as a beacon of light to those who seek it and stay as original as I can be.

PP: Where can our intrigued readers listen to your music?

JV: I’m on every digital platform; they can catch the waves on SoundCloud, SlikourOnLife, iTunes, Spotify just to name a few. You can just search “June Vth” and you get everything.

PP: Anything you would like to add?

JV: To anyone who has a dream they’d like to pursue and accomplish, do so and don’t ever let anyone try to box you. You never know what life has in store for you.
