THE Clermont Eco-Champs, as part of the Take-Back-Our–Rivers project spearheaded by the eThekwini Conservancies Forum, will be hosting an event on Saturday, July 28, to raise awareness on the importance of water and the value of rivers.

According to Thozeka Nhlukwane, the Clermont team have been working tirelessly with the official ward structures by spreading the message about the goals of the project and working towards the objective of getting the community to take ownership of river health.

“The theme for this year’s event is Amanzi Ayimpilo — Water is Life. This event will have entertainment from local artists and there will also be educational talks from various municipal departments. The eco-clubs will also be involved, offering environmental presentations.”

She said the Take-Back-Our-Rivers initiative is a project of the eThekwini Conservancies Forum that seeks to restore the health of rivers across eThekwini Municipality through a process of hands-on river assessments, rehabilitation interventions and various restoration strategies, including clearing of invasive alien species and mobilising the communities.

“The approach that this initiative takes is partnership-based, practical and action orientated, with a particular focus on engaging communities from various economic backgrounds with the intention of encouraging these communities to take co-responsibility with the designated authorities for the health of the stretch of river that they live on.”
