Rapists behind bars

2016-10-18 06:00

THE Camperdown Regional Court convicted and sentenced a 37-year-old father to 20 years’ imprisonment for rape last week.

It is alleged that on 25 December 2013, the accused called his 13-year-old daughter, who lives near his house, and told her that there was traditional healer at the house who was going to heal the family.

When the child went to the house her father told her to go to his room and he followed and raped her.

The child told her aunt and they reported the incident at Inchanga SAPS. The docket was then transferred to Pinetown Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS)for further investigation.

The suspect was arrested, appeared in court and was granted bail. On 24 September 2016 the suspect was re-arrested after he failed to appear in court. He was found hiding under his bed at his home in Inchanga and was sent back to court. He made several court appearances until he was convicted.

In the other incident Camperdown Regional Court convicted and sentenced Msizi Xaba (22) and Minenhle Gwala (26) to 20 years each for rape and 11 for robbery. On 28 September, 2014 both accused were sitting on the side of the road when a 26-year-old victim was on her way home when she came across the suspects. They asked her if she would have sex with them and the victim refused. They pulled her to the grass where they gang raped her before taking her cellphone. A case of rape was opened at Inchanga SAPS and the matter was transferred to Pinetown Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) for further investigation, which resulted in the conviction of the two.

KZN Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bhekinkosi Langa commended the investigators for their dedication during investigation. - Supplied
