Renew business licences

2018-01-23 06:01

TO ensure compliance and proper management of businesses, eThekwini Municipality is calling all businesses that are licensed with eThekwini Business Licencing Department to renew their licences before January 31.

They can do this at their nearest business licencing offices where they initially applied for their business licences.

The municipality business licencing manager, Qondi Liqwa said this procedure is conducted annually and is critical under Section 15(1) of the Businesses Regulations in terms of the Businesses Act 71 of 1991.

The Act requires that every licence holder must every year confirm that the business for which the licence is issued continues to be conducted from the premises specified on the licence.

Also that no other business for which licence is required in terms of the Businesses Act is being conducted from the same licenced premises.

Liqwa said in some cases businesspeople would branch into other businesses utilising the same licence, which is unlawful because, for an example, restaurant regulations can never be the same as for a nightclub.

“We will conduct inspection raids after the stipulated period to catch defaulters. Those who not have renewed by that time, their licences will lapse and the enforcement personnel of the business licencing department will prosecute them for trading without a licence.

They will have to reapply for licences which has cost implications whereas renewing is free,” she added.

Licence holders need to produce their original business licence, ID document, company or business documents, a proxy letter and South African Police Services fingerprints clearance with no illicit activity identified (only applicable to licence holders with item two licences).
