THE Netcare 911 aviation rescue team and the Ambulance Emergency Care students from the Netcare training collage, embarked on a training session at 15 Squadron in Durban last Thursday. .

The day started with the Netcare rescue officer Konrad Jones giving the students a safety briefing around the helicopter.

Once this was done the students were airlifted in the Augusta 109 helicopter to the Blockhouse on the mountains overlooking the sea behind the refinery.

The helicopter hovered over the concrete block and hoisted the students down on a strop. With a senior instructor on the ground , the rescue officer and engineer in the helicopter with a very skilled pilot, they made sure that the students were kept safe at all times.

The rescue response team left us while we were training the students and went for a confined space rescue exercise on board a Oryx helicopter. Once finished with the separate exercises we got together at the old airport for further training.

Using the stokes basket, a patient was strapped in securely and with the medic secured to the hoist, the engineer hoisted them both up to the side of the helicopter. A simulation was then done by flying the patient and medic strapped to the side of the helicopter to a safe zone.

In this exercise there was a female student from Alberlito and two firefighters from the Gillets Fire Station.
In addition, this also corresponded with International Fire Fighters Day making it a very special day for the team.
