DRIVING through Springside Road in Hillcrest, one is mesmerised by the neatness of the lawn and beautiful indigenous succulents which adorn the sidewalks.

According to Keep Hillcrest Beautiful (KHBA) chairperson Marge Mitchell, the area is kept so tidy by Lindsay Mason with the help of gardener Michael Dlamini.

Mitchell said that the late Fred Mason, who lived on Springside Road, had a vision to beautify the rail reserve and he did it for many decades.

“His wife Lindsay, with the help of Dlamini, has kept the area looking beautiful in his memory.

“The grass is mowed and indigenous succulents adorn the area,” she explained.

Mitchell also exclaimed that the place was beautiful and thanked the late Fred Mason’s wife, Lindsay, and Dlamini for keeping his vision alive.

In addition, she awarded Mason the title of winner of the Winter Verge by the KHBA.

She also thanked KHBA committee members Maggie Fleming and Barbara Fourie who chose the worthy verges, having scouted the area in their mission to find a worthy winner of the Winter Verge award.

“The Association is also so grateful to Richdens SPAR, who regularly and kindly donate a very generous hamper for the winning gardener,” she said.

In conclusion, Mitchell said they are so fortunate to live in such a beautiful area.

“Thank you to the residents who work so tirelessly to keep the verges outside their property beautiful,” said Mitchell.
