WITH the Comrades Marathon on June 10, the Hillcrest SAPS are warning the community to be safe at all times and to abide by the rules of the road during the road closures.

Hillcrest SAPS communications officer, Captain Linzi Smith, said that the road closures will be at the weekend so people have sufficient time to make arrangements if they need to get around the road closures. She said that every year they experience harsh comments and impatient members of the public who try to get through the road closures.

“This is an annual event that has been running long enough now for motorist to know that the roads will be closed and vehicles will not be allowed access,” said Smith.

In addition, Smith said that during such big sporting events, residents of the area need to be cautious with their belongings. “We are pleading to the community to please be vigilant and smart about keeping their valuables hidden or left at home and not in view in their parked vehicles when attending the races.

“Remote jamming is also an on-going issue. It is advised that if you are attending events to support your family and friends and do not require the use of laptops or other valuable items, please keep them safely locked up somewhere other than in your vehicle,” said Smith.

She also warned supporters not to leave their bags next to their chairs while watching the event as they need to take responsibility for their belongings.

“These events are crowded and spectators need to be cautious at all times,” she added.
